Southwest Bar Volunteer Legal Aid History

The Southwest Bar Volunteer Legal Aid (SWBVLA) was formed in 1986 to re-establish legal aid service in the 6th J.D. after Colorado Rural Legal Services (CRLS) closed its Durango field office.  The Southwestern Colorado Bar (SWCB) and CRLS co-sponsored the new office with paralegal staff providing coordination of the volunteer services and support services in public benefits rights.  In 1991, CRLS responded to lobbying by the SWCB to extend attorney staffing back to the Durango area.  The original agreement with CRLS has been reworked and continues under the Colorado Legal Services administration of the Durango office.
